"Work experience at Summercroft Primary School
Summercroft Primary School is a Primary School in Bishop’s Stortford (Kent). The students of this school are between 5 and 11 years old. The school provides a high standard of all-round education.
Day 1: (as an example)
At 8.35 a.m. the teachers welcomed me. Then Mr Carter showed me the school building, different rooms and areas. After that the students came in and Mr Carter checked their presence. This process is called “Registration”. At 9 a.m. one student had to read out what different dishes there were for lunch that day and everyone could choose one of them. After that the main group of the students went into the assembly hall and the second teacher worked with a smaller group of students who needed help in some points. When the main group came back into the classroom at half past ten the students had “Morning Maths”. That means that there was a given task on the big screen. At 9.50 a.m. the students had Maths lessons. First the given tasks on which the students worked on before got discussed. After that they had to work with worksheets laying on the tables.
After the Maths lessons there was a break. During that break the students went outside to play on the schoolyard and the teachers and I passed our time in the staff room. After the break, at 10.45 a.m., the students had lessons of “Guided Reading” in which they learned what is important in a text and how to find the main aspects. From 11.15 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. the students had English lessons on this day specific in the assembly hall. Today the topic of the lessons was “scary adverbs, nouns…”. The students had to think about the question which noun belongs to which feeling in a scary situation. Later on, the students had to show those feelings theatrically. From 12.15 p.m. to 11.15 a.m. there was lunch. The students could play outside or could have their lunch in the canteen and the teachers and me were able to eat our own brought food.
After lunch time Mr. Carter talked about and worked on suffixes with the students. At 1.45 p.m. the students continued writing on their “Shackleton stories”. At 2.30 p.m. both year 6 classes came together to sing songs in the assembly hall. Finally school finished at a quarter past three."
